Lost in Translation

A video installation that displays the progression of translation from Russian to Hebrew. The video installation conveys the disparities between original source and translated outcome, as well as the variety of possible translations which occur when two verbal cultures are compared. Visual codes are used to show the inaccuracies of translation (inevitably embedded in any translation process), demonstrating the gaps in a strictly non-verbal fashion. Possible wordings in Hebrew are weighed against the Russian source in an attempt to find the most suitable phrasing. As individual words are examined, they are simultaneously tested within their context in the paragraph. Each time a different combination is printed out. Visuals accompany the progress in an attempt to fathom the associative worlds of both Russian and Hebrew speakers. The translated Text is a prolog writen to the Reussian version of Lolite by  by Nabokov  himself.   Thesis project at  Bezalel Academy   2009.
